About the Anabolics Book
Aede de Groot, Willem Koert
A few days ago we have published the first chapter of our book about anabolic steroids on internet.
On internet because then it will be freely accessible for everybody who is interested in
anabolic steroids for what reasons he or she may have.
This project is a kind of experiment. Will it be possible to explain to a broad public,
which is not primarily interested in science, the ins and outs of anabolic steroids
on a fundamental scientific level and how far can you reach? Recent developments make
this more and more actual.
With these recent developments we have in mind the increasing use of and discussions
about anabolic steroids. Mass media promote the ideal muscular body, the fitness industry
is booming, internet provides free information and access to anabolics. All this stimulates
their use and never before so many persons have used anabolics.
At the same time the scientific interest in anabolics has gradually diminished. Pharmaceutical
companies have focussed their attention on other medicines, doctors have become less and less
enthusiastic about them and authorities produce more and more rules and laws to restrict
trade and use. Doping affairs in sports reinforce the aversion against anabolics.
Sound independent information about anabolics is difficult to get.
The discussion about the effectiveness of anabolics is illustrative. It was only in the nineties
of the former century that scientists got convinced that anabolics could have a positive effect
on muscle growth in healthy men. This scepticism was not really surprising because until then
completely different dose regimes were used by scientists and by athletes and bodybuilders.
The pharmaceutical doses of the scientists did not allow for really convincing conclusions.
Besides, many anabolics never have been properly investigated and also very little information
is available about stakking of anabolics. Much knowledge about these matters is however available
in the grey circuit but at the same time it is often anecdotic in character This results in a
situation where goeroes, underground producers, traders and users provide at present for most
of the information about anabolics.
Does this mean that scientists have nothing interesting to tell about anabolics that could be
of interest for a general public and for users? We think that the answer is positive.
We are positively against uncontrolled use of anabolics. But scientifically sound knowledge
is available that could be of use. What kind of chemical compounds are anabolics, how can you
recognize their names or even their structural formulas, which properties do they have and why
and how are they doing their job?
It is that kind of knowledge that we will try to present in this Anabolics Book. The set up
will be that of a kind of study book. The beginning will present some necessary general knowledge,
but pretty soon it will be focussed on specific features of anabolic steroids. We will try to
describe these items in simple and clear language. Nevertheless there will be subjects that are
difficult when you do not have some basic knowledge of chemistry or physiology. That is a pity
but our advise is, simply continue and pick up the story further on.
Anabolic steroids are powerful compounds and scientists and users have learned to have some respect
for them. The Anabolics Book will try to explain why. The emphasis of the book will be on science.
It will not become a guide for users, dose regimes, or training schemes. We hope that you will find
it interesting.
